15 Great Animated Films

To celebrate my 100th post I would be presenting a lists of my favorite animated films. I've always loved animated films, they will always be a joy to watch. This list is not in any order, it'll be too difficult for me to choose which one is number one and which is number fifteen. So basically, these are random numbers.

1. Toy Story 3

I'm pretty sure you saw that coming. Probably the reason why Toy Story is most loved by everyone from all ages is because, at one point in our lives, we only had our toys as our friends. Who doesn't remember talking to a plastic shape like a human being, making it walk, fly and even drink tea? Toy Story 3 is a great animated film that teaches a lot of things. As one friend told me, its a cartoon for big boys and girls. From what I saw, the film is telling us how to move on and let go of some things in order to grow up. Just because you've moved on, doesn't mean you've forgotten. It also teaches of us of real friendship and real camaraderie. Plus, this won best animated film, but who cares about awards anyway. 

2. Up

The most compelling story line of this awesome animated film is the romance between grandpa and grandma. What's amazing about it is, its only in the movie for less than 15 minutes and yet everyone teared up when that book of memories was flipped by grandpa finding a written note by his beloved wife. Of course, there's the very cute character of Russel and Dog (Doug). This one has probably the finest animation from Pixar.

3. Wall-E

Almost thirty minutes in the film and no words being uttered and people who has seen this film wouldn't even notice. The flawless detail and animation of this film is truly captivating. The character of Wall-E in the beginning is touching and true. The way he held an umbrella for Eve in the rain is an unforgettable scene. For me, a great story is being told even when nothing has been said. The story of Wall-E and his character build up was most compelling during the first few minutes of the film, when nothing was said. Of course, the film  bringing a message about the continuous destruction of the environment is another reason why this film is great.

4. The Fox and the Hound

Most people would have probably forgotten about this Walt Disney classic, but I will never forget this one. This film is one of my earliest memory of being exposed to animated film and Walt Disney. I will never forget the night I smiled and cried. This is a story about an unlikely friendship of a fox (Tod) and a hound (Copper). Their instinct tells them they are natural enemies, but growing up together, they tried to preserve their friendship. Things went a sour turn until the two of them drift apart and Copper hunted Tod. This film tells a wonderful tale of friendship and how it overcomes boundaries. This should be seen by children all over the world and if you haven't seen this one then you're missing one of the greatest Walt Disney creation ever.

5. The Fantastic Mr. Fox

I don't have much to say about this funny animated film, except that it has a mix of humor and sense. Its the first time I've actually seen a heist animated film and it truly is funny and touching at the same time.

6. 5 Centimeters Per Second

I love this animated film. I've talked about it and you can read more about it here. This film is simply amazing. And by the way, yes, its Japanese.

7. The Little Mermaid

I might be bias for this one. Little Mermaid is my favorite Disney Princess and for good reasons. If you look deeper into the story, you'd actually notice that its a romantic tale torn apart because of social stratification and standard. Ok, so maybe its just me over thinking. But I love Ariel's character and even the supporting ones, you have the evil Ursula, the cute Flounder and the funny Sebastian. I think that its one of the greatest animated Disney film ever!

8. The Iron Giant

This films brings back many memories. It was released on 1999 and even today, it still holds a special place in my heart. Like any other films, this is a story of an unlikely friendship between a robot and a child. I don't think I can do justice if I tell you the plot in my own words, so read it here. Twelve years after its release it still holds so much memories for me. This actually a very touching story. 

9. Anastasia

Anastasia, unlike what most of my friends claimed, is not a Disney film. In fact, it is the first animated film distributed by Fox Animated Studios. Its uncanny resemblance of the princess plot makes others to believe it is by Disney. So anyway, one of the great thing about this film is that it is based on an urban legend which claimed that Anastasia, the youngest daughter of the Romanovs from the Russian Imperial Family survived the brutal murder of her family. The film takes us to a journey introducing us to a young woman named Ania who can't remember her past and was commissioned to play the part of Anastasia but in the end turns out to be the real princess.Whats memorable about the film is that it brings an ending for the Anastasia urban legend, which is far from reality. I love this film because of its great sound tracks. Music such as Once Upon a December, Journey to the Past and In the Dark of the Night are just few examples of the great musical performance by this film.

10. Monsters Inc.

I think that Monsters Inc is one of the most under-appreciated animated film. The heart warming story about  scary monsters and kids is brought to life in this Pixar film. But instead of scary monsters, they're simply monsters living like any other human beings in an alternate world and their job is to be the bogeyman of children. The most unforgettable about this film is cutie Boo, the child that lost her way in the monster world and found herself attached to the two monsters who took care of her.

11. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is a beautiful story about a student who crashed into a train with her bicycle and was supposedly killed by it, however at the moment of the impact she closed her eyes and when she opened it, she found herself a few hours before the crash. The story revolves around her always leaping through time. I think that this one is the one of the most beautiful animated film. The melancholic tone yet the humor was perfectly combined. It's a film no one should missed.

12. Finding Nemo

I think that Finding Nemo is one of the best Pixar film out there. The story is heart warming. Its an adventure story mixed with humor, love and care. The story of a father going to extremes to protect his child isn't new, but somehow, Finding Nemo gives the story line a fresh approach, other than the fact that its actually animated.

13. Ratatouille

Ratatouille will always hold a special place in my heart due to the circumstances when I was watching it the first time in cinemas, just a personal attachment. The film is a story of success of two characters and that isn't often the case in most films. And though I hate rats, after watching this, I've actually considered them friendly until one of them ruined my loaf of bread. 

14. Howl's Moving Castle

Another brilliant creation of Hayao Miyazaki. I like, like, like this film! Ok, so maybe its because of Howl's good look that really got me into this film but the story is really good. Like all Miyazaki films, the details is beautiful. The film is about Sophie, a young hat maker but a witch's curse turned her into a 90-year-old grandma. This lead her to an adventure in finding the witch and leading her to another wizard named Howl. Its truly is a fantastic film. 

15. Spirited Away

Lastly but definitely not the least is the film that put Hayao Miyazaki into the map. Long before this film, Miyazaki is already a  respected and well established film maker in Japan. Spirited Away is an Academy Award winner for Best Animated Feature Film. This truly is one of the best animated film in history. Its one of the most celebrated animated film in Japan and in the world. The story of Chichiro lives on. I don't want to tell the plot, I might ruined it or spoil it so just read it here.

I hope you enjoy this post. I grew up with animated films, from Disney and Japan. Animation will always be a great part for my love of films. And with animation, you can almost never go wrong with it. I hope that you can all watch the films I've suggested. You should watch all of Pixars and Hayao Miyazaki's films. 

Movie Buff

Last week I watched Thor and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides by myself to give me the ultimate enjoyment of the film. I watched the first full show of both films, in that case, the cinemas would still be empty and I can sit comfortably and watch the films in peace - no people laughing unnecessarily. Also, I wanted to be the first few people to watch POC. 

Honestly, I got bored with Thor. It is a good film, not great in any way. I didn't felt the thrill of the mystery in the film. You know exactly where it was going from the very beginning. Obviously when you have two princes up for the crown, one will inherit the throne while the other gets jealous and will set-up the other brother. Then the father dies which leave the evil brother to rule and then you have Thor and other messed up family films. I've seen so many films running around in this plot. And besides, the film was set up in what? three days? And there were peculiar events. For example, how did that government officer survived a blow like that? And how come, he readily accepted Thor and his friends in Earth with no questions? I mean really, that never happens, not in other films or in the real world. 

But of course, there were things notable from the film. Like ... ... ... I'm thinking ... the acting? hmm, no, not really. Oh yeah, I have one, the humor! It wasn't really funny but at least there were times when I was laughing. OK I'll stop talking about Thor or people will hate me. 

So, Pirates of the Caribbean was great not as great as the first one but you anything that has Capt. Jack Sparrow in it is awesome. I did felt that the punch lines from Capt. Sparrow were lacking and Penelope Cruz' overflowing boobs is really a distraction - doesn't help that she was pregnant. Anyhow, I think that POC did a good job. 

But really, the point of this blog is me talking about good films. I found out recently that my sister didn't like Blue Valentine and it totally crushed me. I felt that the film was great! It was beyond what I expected and its plot was really different, the photography of the film was great and the acting, don't get me started with Ryan Gosling's crying. And she also watched Never Let Me Go and she didn't like it either. Which led me to conclude that she couldn't appreciate good films. Sorry, but really, she prefers Transformers. Not that I don't like Transformers, it's a popcorn flick and its really a different category in my mind. 

The fact that I actually didn't like Thor as much as I would have wanted got me thinking. What do I really like about movies? Obviously the plot is one, which is probably the reason why I love foreign films such as Thai, Korean, Indian and English because I can see diversity and they have very different story lines and approaches. I see something that I'm not usually used to. Unlike Filipino films that are almost very predictable just by watching the trailer, I see something different, something where police aren't always late, where the bad guys aren't really bad guys or something.



Another thing is the photography of the film. Magic is created when the movie was done with a brilliant cinematographer and a director. The acting is also another. Even the greatest plot could be a trash if the actors couldn't bring the story and characters to life. 

Anyway, I'm just talking about good films and with that, here are some films that I would want to see and hopefully, will not bring me down during the first half of 2011.

6. Hanna

The Blue Valentine

Its February already and everyone knows that February is popularly known for Valentines! Yes, its almost that time of the year again. For couples, its the time to remind each other the love that they have. For singles, its the time to remind them that they are free from obligation and are actually happy. For those who loves someone secretly, its the time to express. Oh yes, the time of the year where Cupid is seen everywhere and hearts are decorated in restaurants. Roses, tulips and chocolates will be everywhere. 

But this post isn't about Valentines itself, it just so happened that the title of the film I fell in love with is Blue Valentine. I just can't put it into words, everything about Blue Valentine is BEAUTIFUL! The acting, the cinematography, the arrangement, it's breath taking. 

Blue Valentine is a story about a couple, Dean Pereira (Ryan Gosling) and Cindy Heller (Michelle Williams), and the falling apart of their marriage. The film is set into two storyline between their courtship and how their lives turned out. (That's all I'm going to say)

The contrasting images and story of the movie makes this film unique and unforgettable. The ironic scene between their first kiss as a couple and their last kiss as a couple at the ending is heartbreaking. On one side, the film tells the story of a young couple falling in love, thinking that they can overcome whatever the world has for them. On another, it tells about two people who loves each other but has become estranged from each other. 

Yes, it is a love story, a tragic one. The film portrays a very realistic approach on marriage and the dramas before, during and after it. The drama elements given by this film will leave you, if not crying, teary-eyed. I love the film and everything about it. The script was amazing, the shots, how it was directed, just everything. Most of all, I loved how the actors portrayed their roles.

Gosling and Williams deserved every nomination they had for the film. I'm just sad that only Williams was given a nod by the Academy Award. I think that Gosling should win every  best actor award there it. Gosling portraying the drunk and emotional husband is amazing and every time he cries in this film, you just want to cry with him. He perfectly portrayed two very different characters for the role. A drunk husband and a loving husband at the same time. This is probably the best of Williams. Her portrayal as a mother and worn out wife is simply flawless. 

This movie took me surprisingly. Although I've read great reviews about it, I didn't know what I was expecting until I've seen the film. With all the films I've watched recently, this one is refreshing to see. The perfect blending of romance and drama, the flawless acting, the amazing direction from Derek Cianfrance made me gave this film 5 stars. 

Another thing about this film, snapshots of when Dean and Cindy were still a young couple was shown during the film's credits. Just made the last scene more emotional.

I hope that everyone watches this film, it's amazing and a kick for reality. As what Gosling said in an interview, "This film shows what happens when people think love is enough."

5 Centimeters Per Second

5 Centimeters per Second is a story about love, time, loss and moving on. A breathtakingly movie with beautiful imagery and animation from popular anime artist and director Makoto Shinkai. The movie is divided into three chapters with each chapters coming from different point of their lives. The first chapter is during when both of them were young. The second chapter is how Takaki struggled to move on and how a girl namely Sumida, fell in love with him. The third chapter shows both Takaki and Akira in their adult lives.

This movie tells the tale of a young couple Tano Takaki and Shinohara Akira and how they grew fond of each other, how they drift apart and how sometimes, time and distance really matters. 

I stumbled upon this anime when I was searching for anime photos with sunset on it. I saw one of the screen shots of the anime and a blog reviewing the movie. I thought of watching the film and indeed it was beautiful. The film is full of symbolism. It's a heartbreaking movie that tells the realities of love. 

5 Centimeters per Second is said to be the speed of a cherry blossom's petal when it falls into the ground. The speed is use as a metaphor of how people can be sometimes towards love. 

Another beautiful symbolism in the movie is the imagery of the sky. Takaki has a recurring dream about watching the sky with Akira on his side. This scene tells us how we want something so beautiful but its too far too reach. All we can do is stare at its beauty for the longest time, trying to reach it with our hands but never really touching it. This is the love of the two main characters in their story. Their love for each other is almost perfect but distance is against them and so is time.

Time doesn't heal everything but instead it only makes the pain less. Takaki never really move on from his first love Akira. He had a previous relationship for three years but choose to break up because he knew he was still hang up with Akira. Like what he said, "Even if we were to exchange a thousand emails ... Our heart would probably not move even one centimeter closer together".

On the first chapter we see Akira running on the other side of the train rails before the train passes byleaving Takaki on the other side. This scene is repeated on the last part. This time, both of them were grown ups. They pass each other on the rail, probably recognizing each other. Both of them paused and turn around just after the train pass by. Takaki waited until the train passed to see who the lady is on the other side. However, the lady was no where to be found. Takaki looked sad and then smiled bitterly, he walked away from the rails. Just like how Akari moved on, he should move on too. He should stop living in the past and try to find a new life with which Akari is not a part of. 

Love does not always with stand against distance and time. No matter how true the love is, sometimes, it's really not meant to be.

There is so much to tell about this film. I'm afraid that I might spoil everything. There are so many scenes that I left out. This movie is deep and so real. It's sad and beautiful at the same time.

Are we really slow like the cherry blossom's petal? We tend to forget to appreciate all the love that we have right now and we don't even know when we will part.

One More Time, One More Chance

I'm tired. I was swimming under the heat of the sun today. However, I cannot bear the thought that I don't have a post for today. 

I was planning to give a review and insight about the anime movie I just finished this morning. 5 Centimeter per Second an anime movie that tells the tale of a love so perfect yet so not meant to be.

I can't do a review, my eyes are rolling from being tired, so instead, let me give you the lyrics of the soundtrack of the said anime. The original of course is in japanese, but let's stick to the english translation, shall we?

The End and The Beginning - TV Season Finales

I can't remember when my addiction for Hollywood TV series started. It was probably when I first watched 2 seasons of Lost on the eve of Christmas day. I finished the two seasons in a span of three days. Or was it when my sister brought home a DVD of Grey's Anatomy season 1? Or how about when I first got interested with HBO's Entourage?

I truly can't remember where and when it all started. Ever since Lost season 2, I waited patiently for it's season 3 until it's latest season right now, which by the way is the final season. Along with Lost was Desperate Housewives, Grey's Anatomy, Entourage, Heroes, Sex and the City and recently, Leverage.

This year, I've witness four season finale of my favorite series. Leverage Season 2 finale, Desperate Housewives Season 6 finale, Gossip Girl Season 3 finale and Grey's Anatomy Season 6 finale. 

I first saw Leverage's season finale last March. But the other three, I saw their finale almost simultaneously. I saw Desperate Housewives' season finale last week, Gossip Girl's just yesterday and today, I saw Grey's Anatomy season finale. 

I can't help but compare their season finale. They are all great shows but some season finales are just so thrilling. Those types of finale that will make you want to shout to the script writers and ask them why. Those that will definitely leave an impact to the audience both frustrations and satisfaction.

They say that every beginning  comes from another's ending. Each season finale is a story for a new beginning. So which finale of the four TV series did I mention did the best job? I'm going to answer that question, but I warn you there will be spoilers. So read on if you want to know what happened.

4. Desperate Housewives Season 6

Desperate Housewives season 6 started with a bang. With Susan's wedding, Karl Mayer's death and Lynette pregnancy. I thought, this is gonna be a good season. It was. There were many surprising events throughout the season. Bree and Orson fixing their marriage, Katherine Mayfair's suicide attempt, Fairview's Strangler and many more. However, I was disappointed with the season finale. I think they made a mistake by making episode 23. I think that episode 22 was way better to be the season finale. With Lynette facing Fairview's strangler and her life  and the twins depends on her next move. With episode 23, a truth was revealed to a friendship, a character moved away from Fairview and a forgotten character came back.

I heard that season 7 is the final season of the show. That's probably the reason why the producers and scriptwriters decided to write Paul's comeback in Wisteria Lane. If season 7 will be the last season then I think it'll be about going back to the roots of Desperate Housewives. The producers maybe decided to go back to season one's plot to finally end the story. It's always good to look back on where we come from, that's probably what their thinking.

3. Leverage Season 2

One of my favorite shows of all time. Leverage is a story about a group of thieves headed by Nathan Ford, a former insurance investigator. With a twist of humor and amazing stunts, this show will throw you off the chair. The picture above shows the role of each of the character. There is Nate, the mastermind, Sofie - the grifter, Elliot - the hitter, Hardison - the hacker and the adorable Parker - the thief.

Leverage's season 2 started with a reunion from the group. Nathan, now sober is better than ever. The second season was set 6 months after the group decided to separate during season one's finale. A new character was introduced throughout the season and Sofie went away for soul searching. New schemes, love stories between the characters and humor of the show makes this season equally good with the first season.

Second season finale was good. A cliffhanger. An old enemy came back and finally got what he wanted. And my favorite, Nathan finally admitted that he was a thief becoming a real part of the group. He shouted, "My name is Nathan Ford and I'm a thief". This season finale definitely left me frustrated and satisfied at the same time.

2. Gossip Girl Season 3

You know you love me, xoxo Gossip Girl. Who doesn't know this line? Whether you're a fan or not, you've heard the tag line somewhere.

I actually thought that Gossip Girl would be the best season finale, but my number one proved me wrong.

The season started out good, with Rufus and Lily finally pushing their love, Chuck and Blair together and Dan's new love interest. This was a great season but the season finale was the highlight.

So I watched the season finale and I thought, uhhhm one week later? Well, every thing that happened and one week later, every thing I expected happened. Jenny Humphrey out of Manhattan, Blair and Serena being single again took the vacation, Nathaniel just broke up with Serena started playing and Chuck, going off somewhere, like last season, this time nowhere near Thailand though.

So, what's so special about that? Well, the last two scenes were. Georgina is back, yes the evil girl turned jesus freak and then went back to hell. She took off her coat in front of Dan revealing a big tummy and showing him photos of seismogram allegedly of Dan's unborn child. Chuck, in Prague walking along the Red Light District when two men came to him, mugged him but he wouldn't give up the engagement ring he was supposed to give to Blair and bang, he was shot and left to bleed.

That's it, season three's finale. Talk about Cliffhangers!


1. Grey's Anatomy Season 6

Indeed, the season that changes everything. I don't even know where to start. Grey's Anatomy is one of those show that leaves me emotional after every episode. It's not like other medical drama, Grey's Anatomy is the real thing.

Season 6 started out with a death of an old friend but a beginning of a marriage too, two actually. Throughout the season I laughed, I cried and most of all I learned. But season six finale, never expected it. The thrill was just there.

A shooter was inside the hospital shooting almost all surgeons. His target? Derek Shepherd, Lexie Grey and Dr. Weber. You can't just imagine the anxiety I felt when I watched the finale. I laughed, I cried and most of all I had my hands in my head and constantly saying "Oh my God".

I watched the Grey's Anatomy season finale a day after I've watched Gossip Girl and mentioned before, I thought that Gossip Girl's season finale was the best, but Grey's Anatomy definitely proved me wrong.

Alex Karev got shot but at the end of the show he was still in critical condition. So was Shepherd, he was operated by Christina and woke up at the end of the episode.

I salute the scriptwriters, not just of Grey's Anatomy but all great shows out there. They always seem to find something new and more exciting about the show.

Differentiating Asian Dramas

Last Monday I decided to watch a Japanese Drama. I've been a fan of Asian Dramas, my favorite of which is "It Started With A Kiss". It's been a long time since I saw an asian drama. The last asian drama that I have seen was Absolute Boyfriend, which is so long ago. 

When I say Asian Dramas I meant, Korean, Taiwanes and Japanese dramas. You might notice I didn't include our very own Filipino Drama, it's because I can't find them in the internet and because I see them on the television anyway. 

Those three dramas from different countries have their own distinct characteristics.

Korean Dramas: Most of the time the girl antagonist is a strong persona. She's poor and is working hard for her family. She then meets a playboy or just an arrogant man who turns out to be freaking rich. For some reason, fate leads them together. At first the girl hates the boy, then secretly one of them falls in love with the other, then they found out that there's a third party (it's usually the best friend) and their love affair is put onto hold and much blah blah blah, they end up together anyway. Take note: the third party is usually the good guy or girl and they never get to have the antagonist. No matter how true their love is. Tsk Tsk Tsk

Full House

Taiwanese Drama: For the most T-drama I've seen the girl antagonist has a witty and jolly character. She is in love with someone who doesn't love her back or that's what she thinks. Sometimes with T-drama, there are so many men antagonist and they're all for the love of the girl but of course, the girl can only end up with one guy and it's always the bad boy image. And with much blah blah blah, they find each other and end up together.

Japanese Drama: Now, J-dramas are unique. You might ask why, this is because most dramas are live action of mangas or animes. You know that Japan is famous for their awesome manga and artistically beautiful animes, ayt? Well, their dramas are also from mangas or animes. Many famous Japanese dramas comes from mangas and animes e.g. Hana Kimi, Honey and Clover, Absolute Boyfriend and even their movies like Death Note comes from manga. Saying that, you should expect that J-dramas most of the time are romance comedy or if its a love story then you should expect it will have awesome stunts and talents from the antagonist.

But this is a generalization. I am not saying that all dramas from those country are really like those of what I said. Because sometimes awesome script writers has the guts to actually make their own story and does not follow the mainstream and tested plots.

In Korea, for example, they have awesome epic and historical shows such as Jumong and Jewel in the Palace. They also have medical dramas and law dramas. 

My knowledge is also limited to the dramas I've seen. The dramas I've seen are usually the famous ones because I don't want to see those who only has two stars on it. Who wants to see a boring drama anyway?

anime addiction

I've been watching anime recently. I can't help but watch animes!! You yourself should watch animes too.
I watch animes for the reasons of past times, escaping reality and have a good laugh. Animes are great for passing times. When you don't have anything to do, you just go and watch animes. You can have a good laugh with it too. Most animes are made for laughing purposes. Creators made it to made the viewers laughs. WHen you have a problem or a toothache, there's no best medicine but laughter.
Escaping reality is another reason. We are very much influence by media right now. We watch movies and dramas and we see some things that are in movies only. Like abilities, powers and stuffs. WE tend to wish that we have something like that. For example, the ability to be invisible or the ability of teleporting or the power to control someone. ANimes are good in this stuff. I know we have to face reality, but sometimes escaping it is the solution..
